22-year-old Xiaolian had a horrible car accident in 2012. After developing an infection that corroded away his nose cartilage, surgeons were unable to repair his nose.

Instead of giving up, his doctors decided to try a unique medical treatment. They were going to GROW Xiaolian a new nose!

The doctors placed a tissue skin expander on Xiaolian’s forehead to grow extra skin. They then took cartilage from his ribs and used it to mold the nose.

SO WHY HIS FOREHEAD?

The surgeons could have grown the new nose on a less conspicuous part of Xiaolian’s body, but they used his forehead so the new nose would be consistent with the skin on his face.

Doctors hope to do the transplant surgery soon.
